The two Icelandic police detectives who are the protagonists of this book are not what one ordinarily thinks of as Icelanders. One came to Iceland as a Vietnamese refugee child and eventually was taken in by an elderly Icelandic couple who taught him to love the Eddas. He is a poet when he's not being a police officer. His partner lives with his widowed mother, who was born and raised in Germany. It is easy to underestimate him.
