Pretty blown away after finally reading this. Aside from some incidental sexism and homophobia, this book hasn't aged a bit in my opinion. In fact, in the wake of all the awful terrorist atrocities we've experienced in the last decade and a half, and especially those still fresh from the last year, it feels like this could have been written today.
The Two Minutes Hate made me think of nothing so much as Fox News, with last year's "kill them all" speech particularly evoked in my mind.

Winston Smith is an ordinary government worker with a spark of individuality that will eventually lead him to challenge the totalitarian, all-seeing government. This is an amazing book and "Big Brother" will know if you don't read it.
I loved this book when I read it high school. I still think it's a fine book, but soooo depressing. Just too many connections to contemporary politics. UGH. ...more
