the handmaid’s tale has got to be my favorite of all of margaret atwood's books. it is the perfect blend cynicism, paranoia and self-preservation. oddly i remember when the movie came out and atwood’s story was criticized as being too extreme -- i guess it’s hard to feel that way now it seems to become more realistic every day. i think of this story every time i use my debt card to buy a pack of cigarettes.

Definitely chilling, in a this-could-be-the-possible-future sort of way. I've actually never read 1984, but I did read Brave New World and even though the two have the same overall subject of utopias gone horribly wrong, The Handmaid's Tale was something that I could quite possibly fear as it deals along the lines of female sexual slavery...

I think the three stars has to do more with my reading mood at this time than the quality of the book. This is the kind of book I would love to discuss with someone because it has so many nuances, relevant themes, etc. Definitely a worthwhile read.
I don't know how I missed this one in school, but this was my first time reading it. It was definitely an interesting world to spy on.
