This was interesting to re-read. Very disturbing, and very oddly lyrically written - it has this dreamy poetic feel, like how you feel on a really hot, still, lazy summer day if you have been alone with your thoughts for too long. I remember being a little annoyed by the last “chapter(?)” and still was this time around. I know people who keep saying it’s too close to reality right now, but I’m clinging to the “this could never happen” mentality because it’s too scary to contemplate.
Man oh man. I don't know what took me so long to read this. It'd been on my To Read list for years, and I'm ashamed I just got to it, but so grateful I finally did.

This book is a brilliant imagining of a single version of what could happen if an extreme religious right faction were to take over. The characters are beautifully flawed as they face the challenges involved living under such an extreme.
I love this book, and am re-reading it currently. I love how it feels like a feminists' version of 1984.

I think one way to define a good book is one that makes you think after you've finished it, and this book definitely qualifies. Some of the worlds that Margaret Atwood creates seem so off the wall, and at first glance you can cast it off as something that could never happen. However, with the state of womens' rights around the world and the various fanatical groups, and scary to wonder if something could happen the way she explains.
