While I am pretty sure I never want to attempt a multi-week trek up the Appalachian Trail with a 50-pound pack on my back after reading this book, I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and have a better appreciation for this national landmark. An exceptional blend of research and humor made this a pleasure to read with plenty of laugh out loud moments. I absolutely loved the beginning, when Bryson is planning his hike along the Appalachian Trail, trying not to embarrass his son at the sporting goods store, and worrying about getting eaten by a bear in the forest. The middle of the book is less fun, but more informative, as the reality of this grueling experience sinks in. We get the history behind the trail itself and the locations along the way. I was a bit disappointed in the ending.

I'm not a big fan of travel books. I don't even really like non-fiction. Which makes it amazing to me that I read this book in a couple days last year. And would willingly pick it up again. Makes me want to plan a backpacking trip!

A fun, fast read. I was particularly fascinated by the background on the trail, the state of America's natural heritage (has it gotten any better in the 20 years since Bryson first reported?). Highly recommended.
