I absolutely loved the beginning, when Bryson is planning his hike along the Appalachian Trail, trying not to embarrass his son at the sporting goods store, and worrying about getting eaten by a bear in the forest. The middle of the book is less fun, but more informative, as the reality of this grueling experience sinks in. We get the history behind the trail itself and the locations along the way. I was a bit disappointed in the ending.

A fun, fast read. I was particularly fascinated by the background on the trail, the state of America's natural heritage (has it gotten any better in the 20 years since Bryson first reported?). Highly recommended.
