I have to teach this book so I figured I should read it, or reread it (I honestly don't remember whether I read it in school). It's a classic, and Steinbeck is brilliant, but it's also disturbing and depressing and not all that engaging until toward the end. Thankfully it's short because I'll probably have to read it a couple more times!

No question about it. Brilliant. One of the best books ever written.

Classic story. Sad tale of friendship.
I don't remember exactly when I read this short book, which has stayed with me for a good many years. Steinbeck had an amazing understanding of, and empathy for, the working class, given his well-to-do middle class upbringing. This is a tragic novella that will sadden the reader and give him/her much to think about. Highly recommended.
