It would be difficult indeed to get to the age that I am without already knowing how the story here goes. Thanks to the several adaptations for both cinema and television, and even Warner Brothers cartoons ("I will love him and pet him and call him George,") I knew the bones of the story and, thanks to my memory of the 1992 film, the ending.

I have to teach this book so I figured I should read it, or reread it (I honestly don't remember whether I read it in school). It's a classic, and Steinbeck is brilliant, but it's also disturbing and depressing and not all that engaging until toward the end. Thankfully it's short because I'll probably have to read it a couple more times!
