I absolutely loved Mary Downing Hahn as a kid, and I still maintain that Wait Till Helen Comes is one of the scariest books I've read, even up to today. I look forward to revisiting some of her other books, and while I remember liking this when I was in elementary school, it now feels like a ripoff of Tom's Midnight Garden. ...more

Ashley and her mother leave the city after her father dies. Their new home is an upstairs apartment in the home of a cranky old woman. When Ashley finds an antique china doll buried in an overgrown rose garden, she schemes to keep it. Unfortunately, the doll belongs to someone else--and she wants it back.

Though there's a ghost, this is not really a scary book.

It's a nice, little story. Some stupid things, but it's OK. Might be good to read for someone whose close person has died. ...more
