I give this somewhere between 4 1/2 and 5 stars. the book did a great job in both roping me in and holding me captive and made me want to read the next book in the trilogy.

The dystopian future described in the beginning is old hat (at least to someone who spent their youth reading YA sci-fi - one in particular from my youth stands out, I wish I could remember it ... humans were kept as pets by these triangular shaped aliens, and one girl escapes the domed city by sneaking out a drainage ditch). One interesting side-effect - this is SO dystopian, the people live in SUCH horrid circumstances, it's SO depressing ... that anyone's life seems better by comparison! So,

Sometimes, you hear a lot of buzz about a book, and are sorely disappointed by a book that in the end isn't that inventive, or that well characterized. In general, you get let down. The Hunger Games, however, lives up to every promise of every review I've ever read. Is it essentially a take on The Lottery by Shirley Jackson? Sure, at its base. Along with Battle Royale, and Lord of the Flies- the theme isn't new. What is new is the nuance, and the incredible way that we feel for the characters. W

I really liked this book. I found Katniss to be an easy person to cheer for and loved the way the story was told in her voice. I can't wait to read the next in the series.

Once you get over the implausibility of the concept, this is a pretty good story. This is a post-apocalyptic America in which the Capitol rules over 12 districts and scares them into submission by taking 2 "tributes" from each district and pitting them against each other in a battle to the death. Katniss steps up and takes the place of her younger sister when her name is drawn in the "reaping." It's a good story about morals, inhumanity, and the pointlessness of war.
