The Diviners (the first in a new series, hooray!) is my favorite type of book--a blend of genres, fun to read and difficult to classify. It's a mix of fantasy, historical fiction, mystery, and suspense, with a dash of romance thrown in for good measure. Bray has painstakingly researched the Roaring Twenties and her gorgeous prose brings the period, and her characters, vividly to life.

Evie O'Neil is pos-i-TUTE-ly the most jake flapper of them all and is always on the trolley. Ug. That was painful to type, which made part of this painful to read. The slang was over the top, and Evie was a complete caricature of a spirited young woman (whoops, I mean flapper as she is constantly describing herself).
Evie is having problems in her Ohio town because of her special gifts, so of course her parents send her to NYC to stay with her bachelor uncle because she won't get into any trouble

I love the time period. I love the language. I love the very different characters and the incr

I can't decide how I feel about this one. On the one hand, I really enjoyed the variety of characters, world-building, and how creepy/scary it was. On the other hand, there was just something about it that just didn't get me hooked and that was really disappointing because I loved Libba's other books. I think maybe the length combined with pacing had something to do with it (or maybe it was just the intro with the long as hell description of wind that put me off). I'd put it at 3.75 stars for no ...more
