This book reminded me of how much I love Libba Bray's writing. She is so descriptive and has such beautiful prose in her stories! The setting for this one was particularly interesting and she completely immersed me in the surroundings, the slang, the dress, and the attitude of the time period. Not to mention the mystery of the plot! This was a really fun read and one I would definitely read again.

This was long, and it started slowly, and I couldn't really like the main heroine, Evie. But slowly she grew on me, and the action picked up, and I became more and more interested. Thorn the big climax came, and it was somehow anticlimactic. Such build up, and then such a small moment. It felt unbalanced.
This was a big book, and I did enjoy it, so,I feel like it deserves a big review... But I'm not really sure what to say. I guess it would be fair to,say that I am nonplussed.

Not usually a historic fiction reader but I enjoy Libba Bray books so I gave this one a try. I thought it was really interesting and well written and the story was downright creepy. There are a number of unexpected elements and it keeps you guessing. The one caveat I have is the pacing was at times a little slow. And the story felt long. It isa book I didn't feel compelled to stay with I took it in small bits. Definitely leaves you waiting for the next one in the series!

Really enjoyed the reader (January LaVoy) but the book seemed overly long in my opinion. Might listen to the second one.

review to come.
