I was given this book by a friend who read it for a book club and loved it. I suggested it for our book club and I think because of the historical aspect, people were eager to read it. The narrator, Ruby begins to narrate from the moment of her conception. She is by turns sardonic and outright hilarious. This author has been on my radar for awhile and I finally decided to pick one of her books out of my to-be-read case and give her a try. Her writing had me engaged enough to possibly try another one of her books in the future, but this one didn't do much for me. My biggest problem was that the characters were all vaguely unpleasant, and not even in a very interesting way. They weren't compellingly horrible, just sour and selfish and ill-humored.
