This was an intimate look at a culture I knew nothing about. From the very specific form of dress to the tea cermony, just the traditions of the geisha were interesting in themselves. The story of one girls journey through life as a geisha was hard enough on its own, but add to it a transition into a modern world and a war, i was completely drawn in.
I didn't want to read this book, but my sister-in-law sent it to me in Israel. I'm not into stories about Japanese culture, but it was really interesting in spite of that. I haven't seen the movie so I can't compare them.
