I was a little leery about reading this book, but was pleasantly surprised by the author and his tasteful handling of a potentially obscene subject matter. The "memoir" begins in a poor fishing village in 1929 Japan where nine-year-old Nitta Sayuri is taken from her home and sold into slavery to a geisha house. Very very good book. I enjoyed the characters and really wanted to follow their story even more. The story has stuck with me and I'm actually very interested to see how they did the movie now that I've read the book.
