I loved this inspiring memoir. Gilbert attained the American Dream--great husband, successful career, big house in the 'burbs. However, when she started trying to get pregnant, she realized that not only did she not want a baby, she did not want the life she was living. She divorced her husband, got a book deal, and set out on a year of travel to find herself--Italy for the food, India for the meditation, and Indonesia to figure out how to balance pleasure and spirituality.

I thought this book was surprisingly better than I imagined it would be. I expected to be more put off by the story, rather than enjoy it as much as I did. I especially enjoyed the second section of the book, the "Pray" section about being in the Ashram in India. I thought this would be my least favorite part of the book and I would have to suffer through it. I was absorbed by Gilbert's tale, in part because it began on a familiar note: her confusion and panic over her failing marriage. Her travels through Italy and India in particular spoke to our similar passions for good food and spiritual seeking. Perhaps there are no new profundities here, as other reviewers have accused, and perhaps Gilbert is indeed self-absorbed and petulant... this is a memoir, and a very human one, filled for me with moments of recognition and commiseration. I read it over ...more

I really REALLY enjoyed this book. I got so much out of it, and it came at a perfect time, for me. It came at a time that I was feeling over-extended, taken-advantage-of, and over-booked. Before I started the book...the day before, in fact...I had decided that it was time for me to not feel selfish about taking ME time and using it. Often. Imagine how happy I was when I completed the first section of this book (the "eat" part, lol). READ THIS BOOK! Listen to it. Breath it in and enjoy. ...more

I really liked this one. Good, interesting, and written with a decent amount of wit… I liked the story, even with its God-centered talk. Elizabeth Gilbert did a wonderful job of discussing God and spirituality without alienating people who believe differently. The book is a wonderful chronicle of her travels as well, and gives a great picture of each place she visits.
