What Members Thought
The book was an engaging read, but it drives me mad. Gilbert described different places and people well and her "characterization" of her cowboy-esque friend at the Ashram was really clever. However, it's difficult to buy into her spiritual journey. I agree with the other writers that she is self-absorbed and her spirituality is irrelevant to most people without her means.

I know, I know...the controversy of this book! However! I listened to it on my iPod and I LOVED it. I don't think i would have liked to read it at all in fact, but listening to it was wonderful. I got lost in the settings and the people and thought it was a great journey...

As a woman who is pretty secure with my current place in life, parts of this book were difficult to relate to...the author appears to be a "woman in crisis" for a good portion of the first 1/3 of the book, which made it a little difficult to bear at times. But the second 2/3 of the book were a HUGE payoff!

I found many insightful observations about life, spirituality and acceptance while reading this.. I just wish it hadn't taken me so long. It was good, but not a page-turner for me. I enjoyed it, but I didn't fall in love with it - as many of my friends had. ...more
