The book was an engaging read, but it drives me mad. Gilbert described different places and people well and her "characterization" of her cowboy-esque friend at the Ashram was really clever. However, it's difficult to buy into her spiritual journey. I agree with the other writers that she is self-absorbed and her spirituality is irrelevant to most people without her means.

I have no idea if this is actually a good book.
I mean, I think it is, because Gilbert is a charming, funny writer with a great sense of herself, and it focuses on some of the things that I most enjoy reading about in the world -- food, travel, religion -- but, fact: I have no objective idea if this book is good, because it was simply a book that came to me in the exact right moment, when this was the only book I could possibly read. I read this without knowing about Oprah's hooplah around it--maybe it's better that way? There are a couple of powerful images from this book that stick with me, and for them alone, it was worth the read.

I had to stop listening to this one - BORING!! It was putting me to sleep which is NOT a good thing since I listened to it in my car on my way to and from work! I guess I just prefer "lighter" books for my commute times!
