Bechdel’s father had a secret from his family that made him a stern, exacting person. It was something that he and the author had in common – homosexuality. It wasn’t until after she came out to her parents that she found out the truth about her father; however, within months of her telling them about herself, her father was dead by an apparent accident.

The story of a dysfunctional family, for the most part here isn't very unique. People don't understand each other, communication is poor and people struggle with their sexuality. The graphics are interesting. The author tries to set her story apart by framing it with Joyce and other literary authors. Instead of creating an interesting distinction, it only work at alienating readers who don't have a master's degree in English Lit.

I'm glad that someone in my book club suggested this -- I loved it. It's a quick (but not light) read, though not as quick as you would think, as the pictures are so detailed. Covers so many themes -- father/daughter relationship, LGBT issues, the lasting influence a parent has on a child, etc. Amazing!
