This is a wonderfully creepy, magical and enchanting story. I loved it. This is the story of Jacob - who has just lost his beloved grandfather. His grandfather was a storyteller, telling Jacob wild stories of children he knew during WWII. Jacob grows up with these fairy tales only to wonder, "could any of the stories be true?" The author has included vintage photographs in sepia hues that he has collected. All these stories revolve around these odd photos of children...a girl levitating, a woman

The author took some old photos and thought of a story to wind them together. It hangs nicely off the illustrations, which are liberally spattered through the book, but has a life of its own, too. It reminds me of Catherine Sefton or Carrie's War, somehow, while still feeling very fresh. There are monsters, there is intrigue, there is satisfaction. I enjoyed.
