I like this book better the more I think about it. My initial reaction was that it was an elaborate bit of clever trickery, but the depth of the writing is what redeems it.

One of the many books added when I first posted on goodreads, and finally it is getting read. Thanks my 12 in 2012 list for longest on the TBR list!

I hated this book for the first 100-150 pages. The story was moving painfully slowly and I felt distant from the characters and wanted them to hurry up to get to the center of the story. But then the perspective shifted and the book came together in a haunting and impressive way. While I'm often quite critical of novel-within-novel devices, this book was so well crafted that I ended up loving the post-script and the structure all the more than if it had merely told the first story. You have to ask yourself one question: Do I love books more than movies or vice versa?
The movie this book was made into was phenomenal, but it was also one of the most close-to-the-book adaptations I have ever seen. I watched the movie first, then read the book a couple of years later (trying to put some distance between them) but I still knew everything that was going to happen.
It is my personal preference to rather have a book ruin a movie than vice versa. I get much more pleasure out of rea ...more
