I like this book better the more I think about it. My initial reaction was that it was an elaborate bit of clever trickery, but the depth of the writing is what redeems it.

favorite quotes (possible spoilers):

Chapter 1

At the age of eleven she wrote her first story—a foolish affair, imitative of half a dozen folktales and lacking, she realized later, that vital knowingness about the ways of the world which compels a reader’s respect. But this first clumsy attempt showed her that the imagination it

One of the many books added when I first posted on goodreads, and finally it is getting read. Thanks my 12 in 2012 list for longest on the TBR list!

I knew the movie was good, but literary jitters kept the book on my TBR for years. What if I didn't enjoy the book as much? What if it's secrets having been revealed ruined it for me? I hated this book for the first 100-150 pages. The story was moving painfully slowly and I felt distant from the characters and wanted them to hurry up to get to the center of the story. You have to ask yourself one question: Do I love books more than movies or vice versa?

The movie this book was made into was phenomenal, but it was also one of the most close-to-the-book adaptations I have ever seen. I watched the movie first, then read the book a couple of years later (trying to put some distance between them) but I still knew everything that was going to happen.

It is my personal preference to rather have a book ruin a movie than vice versa. I get much more pleasure out of rea

Please see my detailed review at Amazon.com Grace's "Atonement" Review"

Please click that the review was helpful to you at Amazon so that my rating continues to climb!

I will discuss Atonement further in my BookCrazy discussion group, but I will let it suffice that this was one of the best reads of 2008 for me. Deeply evocative language, interesting thought processes and sentences I wanted to sink into. Phenomenal book.

I liked it, but felt that his prose was a bit difficult to trudge through and the end was terribly predictable.
