4 1/2 stars. Really, really good; I think I was in the mood for a modern-day, romantic, relationship book. Also, I love British books & characters. I'd like to see the movie (oh please, don't f* it up!) but will wait for reviews. Worthwhile reading if you like meaningful romance and/or like Nick Hornsby's books (similar in nature).

tThe novel starts out with Dexter and Emma's first meeting in 1988 after their college graduation. In every subsequent year for the next 15 years, one or the other of them is in the depths of despair. Nobody can seem to get their act together, emotionally or professionally. They continue to dance around the fact that they care for one another and keep hooking up with all the wrong sorts of people while continuing to pretend they are nothing more than "best friends."

Emma and Dexter hook up on the night they graduate from college. They spend the next day together, talking about their hopes and plans for the future. Even though they are very different, they decide to stay in touch as they go their separate ways. Each St. Swithin's Day over the course of 20 years, we get a glimpse into their lives and the way life's ups and downs have altered each of them, as well as their relationship.

Do you remember what you were doing on 15th July this year? Last year? The year before...? The premise of this book is a glimpse of the relationship between Emma and Dexter on the same day every year, from when they meet at graduation from university and onwards through the highs and lows of their lives as they drift apart and together again over and over.
