I really enjoyed this book. Even though the male protagonist was often quite unpleasant, I found the relationship between the two main characters interesting and funny and fun to read about, and I liked the concept of the book. I'm surprised, however, that it got such great reviews in major publications since despite its interesting structure and its little twist at the end, it really is just chick lit. It was fine for what it was. Like I mentioned earlier, Nicholls' writing was clever as was the one-day snapshot premise. The trips around England/Scotland of the last two decades (and a half) was particularly lovely and I ultimately really liked Emma. So it was fine.
However, throwing Hardy quotes all over the place doesn't magically turn one into Hardy. It was predictable, as romances are. Unfortunately this plot was a little too Nicholas Sparks and not enough Nick Hornby.
