Part of me loved this book and wanted to give 4 stars...another part of me hated it and wanted to give 2 stars. I settled for 3. This is the story of Emma Morley and Dexter Mayhew's up and down (though mostly down) relationship over the course of many years, told only in snapshots of a single day each year - July 15th (St. Swithin's Day). I am a dedicated 'readit1st' person. So I had to read this before seeing the movie.

I am really glad I read it, have yet to see the movie but there is so much to this story that I cant imagine the movie doing it justice! It was fine for what it was. Like I mentioned earlier, Nicholls' writing was clever as was the one-day snapshot premise. The trips around England/Scotland of the last two decades (and a half) was particularly lovely and I ultimately really liked Emma. So it was fine.

However, throwing Hardy quotes all over the place doesn't magically turn one into Hardy. It was predictable, as romances are. Unfortunately this plot was a little too Nicholas Sparks and not enough Nick Hornby.

This book freaked me out in that it was like I was reading a story about my own life. Emma and I are a lot alike.
