Part of me loved this book and wanted to give 4 stars...another part of me hated it and wanted to give 2 stars. I settled for 3. This is the story of Emma Morley and Dexter Mayhew's up and down (though mostly down) relationship over the course of many years, told only in snapshots of a single day each year - July 15th (St. Swithin's Day). It was fine for what it was. Like I mentioned earlier, Nicholls' writing was clever as was the one-day snapshot premise. The trips around England/Scotland of the last two decades (and a half) was particularly lovely and I ultimately really liked Emma. So it was fine.
However, throwing Hardy quotes all over the place doesn't magically turn one into Hardy. It was predictable, as romances are. Unfortunately this plot was a little too Nicholas Sparks and not enough Nick Hornby.
