Fairly formulaic kid-stumbles-into-fantasy-world YA, a la Narnia or Oz, with none of the usual charm. Overall it was much too grisly for my taste, and the world David finds himself in is both bland and unpleasant. Plus it's hard to figure who the audience should be -- the writing is pretty archaic stylistically (despite being published in 2006) and talks down to its readers, but there's a running joke about Communist dwarves that's only going to hit home for an adult.

I love this book! It's a good mix of reality and fantasy, although more on the fantasy side. If you like stories about fairy tales--especially darker versions of fairy tales, this is the book for you! It's about a boy who is dealing with the death of his mother by constantly reading. Then a character from the book enters his world and the boy eventually his the fantasy world and adventures ensue. ...more
