A collection of essays about gender and race in the context of popular culture.

Some resonated strongly, and others left me wondering what her point was. Overall, a worthwhile read, especially if you're familiar with pop culture. And for those like me who can't resist the utterly danceable "Blurred Lines" despite its rapey message, Weird Al's "Word Crimes" sets that summer anthem to a message about the importance of good grammar.

Sharp. Insightful. Fierce. Vulnerable. Hilarious. Heartbreaking. On point. Raw. Passionate. Self- aware. Damning. Empathetic. Relatable. Relevant. Bold. And with grace.

Just a few of the words that describe the many essays in this collection, and some of these pieces might even encapsulate all of these concepts. I love the casual but witty style which makes the essays so digestible, even as they dive into critical analysis on a variety of complex sociological issues and events. As is to be expect

Roxane Gay is one of those writers that is very good at turning things on their head, examining them from a different yet still doesn't make you feel stupid for only seeing the surface. Her deconstruction of 50 Shades of Gray made me laugh out and cheer. Her topics for these essays vary from personal, (her love of scrabble) to general (Tyler Perry and music) each one showing me something a little different.
