This book came highly recommended and I also wanted to check it out before I see the movie. Having said that, I can see why people enjoyed it. The writing is beautiful and brings the characters and scenery to life. I felt like I was in Brooklyn in the 1950s while reading it. It's a story where a lot of nothing happens. There were so many opportunities for the story to develop some depth, tension, or even a twist but alas, no such luck. Ellis was a dreary character who basically just did as she was told by everyone in her life. Moved from Ireland to Brooklyn because her mother and sister said so. She married Tony because he said so.
