For me this book was just ok. I didn't have the emotional reaction that many others had to this story. I found most of the characters unlikeable. Even the characters that seemed like "good people" were too spineless and too martyr-like for me to care about them at all. Had I been able to connect with these characters I think the book would have made more of an impression. As it was, it was a fast and mostly engaging read, but one that I'll likely forget completely in a month or two. ...more

I put this on my "to read" list five years ago. I was reading other books, didn't have friends recommend it...and read it because of the Popsugar challenge. So glad I did It was melodramatic. Utterly. But the sense of life off the coast on and island with a lighthouse was palpable. I loved it. Well written but tedious at times

There were so many places in this book where the prose was so well-written it made me catch my breath - and so many times I thought to myself, "Can we just get on with it?" (The story itself.) Overall not a bad read. ...more

I am calling this the best book I have read thus far this year, granted it is only the third book I read. The story was very compelling. I found that I didn't like some of the characters some of the time, but I thought they were written in line with their circumstances. I can't wait to discuss this in my book club. ...more
