I finished this three days ago and I can't stop thinking about it - it was so very good. I loved the mixed media aspect of the book, which is normally something I tend to find jarring, but I feel like it worked so well to make the story more alive. It was somehow incredibly creepy, like couldn't get to sleep right after reading it creepy, even though the fear aspect wasn't overt at all. I can't put my finger on what it was exactly that made it so terrifying, even now, but I'd say be prepared to

The first 3/4s of the book were great; riveting, suspenseful, scary in all the good ways. The last quarter, where things were wrapped up in a nice bow, was also good, but not as good. This may not sound very original or exciting, but Pessl weaves in and out of different literary genres. She builds both the story and characters very slowly without the slightest hint of impatience. Meh.
I liked the premise. A lot. But it was one of those books that left me wondering how awesome it would have been in the hands of a better storyteller, or if Marisha Pessl had been better edited. There was a LOT of exposition, and the language was so clunky it kept tearing me out of the story. I know what she was trying to do, but I feel like if I'm reading a book and the author lets me see what's behind the curtain too often, it's not worth my time. ...more
