I have always found Alice Hoffman to be hit or miss, so I always wondered how she could be the one behind the 90s movie that I adored. The answer: it's a completely different story. The Hollywood movie took loose character sketches from the book and made their own story. Surprisingly that made me like the book better because I didn't know what would happen. Hoffman still is not going to be a favorite, and I'd pick the Hollywood version between the two. ...more

I enjoyed Practical Magic, but not nearly as much as The Rules of Magic. I think the “drama” of the story wrapped up a little too easily and almost wasn’t needed. I would have been content just being inside the lives of the 3 generations of Owens women.
