Boys get stranded and, left to their own devices, devise a system of government crueller than any fascist regime. I found the premise that we are all vile at heart a depressing one, an outlook I would prefer not to spread. I hated this book.
I read this book about 11 years ago and really didn't like it, but didn't like it. So as a result, I wanted to re-read the book once again, hoping that I would probably have a different opinion about the book, but alas I didn't. I don't know why, but it really felt like it was a book about a bunch of boys who were just stranded on an island and didn't know how to organize themselves. More or less, it just frustrated me and left me scratching my head as to what the point of the book exactly was.

Overrated, IMHO. While the plot concept is itself interesting, the execution is shallow, predictable, and tedious. The author creates memorable and likable (or hatable, when needed) characters, but those characters act in such a stereotyped, pidgeonholed fashion that there's hardly reason to ensure every page/chapter is read. Read the first three chapters and the last one or two, then watch an episode of Survivor and let your imagination fill in the gaps.

I really have trouble enjoying a book where they kill off the fat kid with glasses! Makes me nervous.
