Somehow I didn't have to read this in high school. When I was getting my credential to teach English, it was used as an example in the texts because it was a book the authors assumed anyone reading their book would have read. I had decided I'd read it on my own, but then got the needed impetus when I had to teach it to my 10th grade class. I read this book in the 8th grade and as far as I remember it was the first book that used symbolism, metaphor etc. My mind had to; for the first time; wrap around a story with one plot, but so many other hidden meanings. I don't know if I got as much out of it then because now it seems like it is just a thin veil of a story to cover the authors true agenda.
