This is definitely one of those books that is hard to put down, and which has so much heart that you overlook some of the plot conveniences. I think that this book will stay with me for a long time, not only the historical lessons, but the cleaning and cooking lessons that are throughout. Eye opening. Very curious to see how this one gets made into a movie.

I liked the book. What interested me the most was the way she would change the way each of the characters spoke. I didn't like the ending though. It felt as though the book just stopped in mid air.

Gave up on this one after about 170 pages or so. I just couldn't. I had a hard time with the conceit of the author writing for black maids in the 1960's. I get it, fiction writing takes imagination, but something about the whole thing just rankled me. I couldn't forget the fact that it was happening, and to me that's the sign that a book isn't very good. You should be able to lose yourself in it, not constantly think about it.

I devoured this book and the only thing I regret is that it took me so long to get around to reading it. The different voices were so well done and the story is so compelling. I may be one of the few people who hasn't seen the movie and I probably won't see it, because I have such vivid impressions of the characters in my head that nothing else could ever live up to them. Read the book and you'll love it.
