I enjoyed the story thoroughly. I do think the author simplifies the characters and relies on stereotypes but the emotion expressed is genuine and that is what has made this book a best seller. Race relations are a tough topic and one book is not going to make things clear or better. But one more chance to examine relationships in our lives and give anyone we know the benefit is worth it.

I'm fairly surprised I liked this book. Although I love To Kill a Mockingbird and Huck Finn, I avoid books written with accents/vernacular because it takes more attention from me to pay attention and understand the story. I also usually avoid books with multiple narrators because it's just so confusing... and I'd have to pay attention more.
