At the outset, I think it's fair to say that how funny you will find this will depend on how familiar you are with the stories that Ortberg is playing with here. A passing familiarity will do, even if you haven't read the book yet. I never made it through Wuthering Heights, but I know enough of the story to find the texts hilarious. My favorites, however, were the ones based on the authors I know well, such as Poe. And the sections on Gone with the Wind? That's my favorite book, so I was laughin ...more

This was a very fun, a very quick read, but some of the literature mentioned went over my head/I had never read them, such as Cormac McCarthy; Medea; etc. However, the ones I did understand were very clever. A couple of my favorites that stood out to me included Wuthering Heights and Little Women.

Moderately amusing. There are some real gems in here. Some of them might be funnier if I was better versed in classical literature, but really I was reminded of how many classics I haven't read or don't remember, and then I just felt like the awkward kid who doesn't get the joke. Heh. Heh heh? ...more

This was a hilarious book that, on its own, would be a fast read. I read in it small amounts in between reading other books. He is a kindred spirit and is so freaking funny.

I was looking for something light and fluffy to clear my brain. This isn't a book that you really have to concentrate on. The premise is that famous literary characters are sending text messages to each other. I didn't find any of them haha funny but there is a humor to some of them. I didn't give it a rating because it's not a book you can rate. ...more

Bought in a whim, wished I’d saved my money. Some of the text conversations were funny, but most were absurd and not very true to the initial story. I also skipped several because I didn’t know the source material, like Daisy Miller. Hands down, my favorite was the Edgar Allan Poe one.
