This book was just perfect. A wonderful blend of Arabian Nights and the burgeoning modernity of late 19th century New York, it wove many seemingly disparate threads ever closer to a climax that was so exciting and terrifying that at points I didn't dare keep reading and yet couldn't put it down.

The Golem and the Jinni was one of the best books I’ve read so far this year. It was such a great story that I was so caught up in it. I would’ve stayed up past my bedtime (all too easy as I sleep before 1030) but with two kids demanding all my energy I need my sleep. Still I managed to read and read this, while pushing the 1yo on his tricycle, while the kids napped in the afternoon, in between doing chores, and during my reading time after the kids went to sleep. Read for the 2017 Popsugar Book challenge - book about a mythical creature.
I have always enjoyed stories of golems (and Jewish folklore in general), and I have family roots in Lebanon, so this book was a nice meeting of those two worlds. The golem is a lovely creature, and I thoroughly appreciated the tough situations she was in. The djinni, a less likable character because he is so cavalier about other people's needs and wants, also became so much more sympathetic by the end of the story. A wo ...more

the story on the whole was interesting but didn't have that extra something that pulls me in as a reader. I found myself reading the 2nd half for the sake of finishing what I started, not excitement for the story, and I didn't dislike the book to quit it either
