I've now read most of Sara Gruen's books and I find her to be hit or miss. I loved Water For Elephants and the Ape House, but I couldn't get through Riding Lessons, and almost didn't make it through this one. I get that she's trying to show to show a transformation, but when you start with insufferable characters it's really hard to care what they go through and how they come out on the other side.

What's not to like? Scotland? WWII? The Loch Ness monster? An American socialite in disgrace? Check check check. This novel starts out with a bang but starts to lag pretty soon after the first act. Keep reading however, it picks up steam again and I didn't want to put it down. I enjoyed reading about Scotland and the protagonist Maddie - her priorities change as she changes and she starts to see the man who she marries unravel in front of her. Another long-ago started and abandoned book finished - I’m on a roll! I didn’t think I’d like any of the characters in this one, but they grew on me - and Ellis, who seemed charming and harmless, really surprised me. Maddie turned out to be really awesome and nuanced, also unexpected. I wish there was a bit more Nessie (I love Nessie!) but I enjoyed the slightly magical bits and the end was very sweet.

A great story!!!

To be honest, I wish this book was longer. The story itself was riveting but I feel the end was rushed. I admire this author a great deal. What a great writer!!!
