I agree with friends that call this a must read. What an incredibly inspirational story! Hillenbrand's writing pulls you in immediately and keeps you so absorbed in Louie's journey. After reading so much about the WWII European theater, I realized I really didn't know that much about Japan and the fighting in the Pacific. Chuck's grandfather survived the Battan Death March after being captured in the Philippines, so reading about this experience gave what I am sure is a very similar account of w

If this book were fiction I'd criticize it for being implausible--there's no way someone could survive all that. And I'd say it dragged on too long, that Zamperini was sent to one too many Japanese camps. But of course this story is true. I'm not a fan of books about war, and not a big reader of nonfiction, but Hillenbrand is an engaging storyteller.
