I agree with friends that call this a must read. What an incredibly inspirational story! Hillenbrand's writing pulls you in immediately and keeps you so absorbed in Louie's journey. After reading so much about the WWII European theater, I realized I really didn't know that much about Japan and the fighting in the Pacific. If this book were fiction I'd criticize it for being implausible--there's no way someone could survive all that. And I'd say it dragged on too long, that Zamperini was sent to one too many Japanese camps. But of course this story is true. I'm not a fan of books about war, and not a big reader of nonfiction, but Hillenbrand is an engaging storyteller. My mistake on this book. I went into it thinking it was historical fiction instead of just non-fiction. It’s an intriguing story but I thought that it would be a story and not just the historical telling alone. That’s my fault because I expected something different.
