It turned out to be so much more than a book about a runner, though.
I was very interested in Louie's story and found myself really rooting for his circumstances to improve. The last few chapters of the book went very quickly. I wanted to know more about his recovery, family, and later years. ...more

What an amazing story! Although I resisted this one despite all the hype, I'm glad I finally read it. The story of Louis Zamperini is one of courage, stubbornness and strength in the face of overwhelming danger and human cruelty and, dare I say, one that should be required reading in school. He is a true American hero and Hillenbrand's telling of his story was superb. Highly recommended for book groups and any readers from age 13 and up. (I'll have to be sure to get a copy for my Dad.) Wow.
