I can't believe I never read this trilogy before now. I read the first book in the trilogy over the weekend, then read this one in practically one sitting. I think I actually liked this book slightly better than the first book, but that may just be related to this one having a strong female lead. I also appreciate that the characters and events in the books have slight overlap, but that it really isn't necessary to have read the first book to enjoy the second. Compared to the great dislike I had for the first one, this book is a huge improvement. Right from the start there is a character with problems and struggles, which, you know, is what fiction needs. And it's an interesting setup.
It still falls short for me because it's quite slow, like the first book, and the exciting thing that happens is the end of the book, not the beginning. Meh. Still have two more to read, so we'll see how it goes.
