I read (listened to) this book for the Goodreads group "Ultimate Popsugar Reading Challenge" because it was just about the only 2016 bestseller that really interested me, although I normally don't read celebrity memoirs. However, I had watched (on YouTube) the episode of "Who Do You Think You Are" that featured Alan Cumming so I knew that this would not be the usual recital of parts played and successes made. Alan Cumming did a great job reading his own book. He appeared on "Who Do You Think You ...more

Alan Cumming's honesty and heart are evident in this memoir of his troubled childhood. I didn't know if I would be able to listen to him (audiobook) tell the story of his father's physical abuse, but it's not overly detailed or horrific, and Cumming is a confident storyteller.

I don't read many celebrity books, so I was a bit reluctant--however, Cumming isn't writing about the famous people he works with or is friends with. This is a raw, important story about a young man finding his way, as well

I enjoy reading memoirs and love how everyone has their own special story to tell! You can never guess what someone’s story is and I encourage you to open yourself up to get to know others whether in an airport lounge or at your kiddos sports practice! There are so many beautiful stories to be told...okay on to the book... Alans story is pretty crazy and wonderful and tragic all at the same time. This book looked interesting to me because I love genealogy and I was intrigued as to how his geneal ...more

Alan Cumming is one of those actors you know when you see him and has some quirky characters in his past. For some reason, when I saw the book I really wanted to read it even though I don't really delve into the personal lives of celebrities on the norm.

Written as flashbacks while following a current narrative, Alan describes a less than ideal childhood growing up in Scotland. His father was abusive, both physically and mentally. Or was he his father? And what about his mother's missing father?

My new favorite thing is to listen to audiobooks that are read by the author. I would recommend this audiobook. I like Alan C. but I am not a huge fan and I didn't know anything about him. I loved listening to this story about his relationship with his father and his discovery of his family history. ...more

"..neither money nor my work define me. I like them, they allow me to do many things I enjoy, but if I did not have them, I know I would be able to find something else to do, I would be able to survive, I could be happy."

This book.
I was not expecting this emotional of a roller coaster. Oh sure, I knew it was going to be rough and thought provoking. However, I did not expect to get sucked in like I did.

I did not expect to be fully involved and take this journey with Alan as he rehashed his life

Wow amazing memoir of the abuse he suffered as a child. Very brave of him to have told his story

Interesting. How people overcome such trauma is always inspiring. But memoirs really are hard to knock out of the park, at least ones by famous people, in my opinion. So worth a read, but no literary gem here.

This was really good. I've enjoyed watching Alan Cumming on TV, and in this book you really get to know how he thinks and feels. His story has so many ups and downs, and yet he still really seems like someone I would love to know. He seems very real and approachable.

I especially liked his response to dressing like a woman for a show in South Africa. That women are forced into bondage so men can both lust for them and take care of them.
