This is a gem of a book. I'm not entirely certain how to even review this thing- it's history, but not. It has footnotes, which are historical, but are not. The narrator is reliable, except that he isn't. The Spanish was generally easy enough to guess (for a non-Spanish speaker), but I think you'd miss quite a bit if you're not geeky enough to get the d20 jokes, or the Lord of the Rings references, and the pervasive fantastical nature of the story and the story tropes Diaz uses.

I loved this book. It sounds like our generation - mixed language, urban, American. I could hear it. And I am not sure I can really articulate everything I loved about it, but I'll take a shot: the footnotes (brilliant); the history of the whole family working its way in; the way Oscar talks; and the unapologetic Spanish, everywhere, without translation. And of course the multiple triumphs Oscar enjoys in the final pages of the book. It was one of my favorite books ever.
