In this first book of a trilogy regarding and by civil rights icon John Lewis, we get two timelines. In one, it is Inauguration Day 2009 and Mr. Lewis is preparing witness the first African-American being sworn in as President of the United States. In the other timeline, included in the beginning as the story he's telling two young visitors to his office, Lewis is a little boy, then a young man in the Deep South of the United States.

After watching Selma in honor of MLK Day, I read this quick little book to get some more context into John Lewis’ life and what led him to begin his inspiring decades-long career in politics and civil rights. His story about preaching to his chickens was endearing and his passion for education is unquestionable.
In graphic novel format, John Lewis describes his childhood up through college and his participation in the grassroots of the civil rights movement.
I wish I had been taught more about the Civil Rights Movement in school. This is the kind of history America needs to be aware of. We need to face that it wasn't that long ago that people stood up for their basic human rights. And we need to continue to keep fighting.
