In one, it is Inauguration Day 2009 and Mr. Lewis is preparing witness the first African-American being sworn in as President of the United States. In the other timeline, included in the beginning as the story he's telling two young visitors to his office, Lewis is a little boy, then a young man in the Deep South of the United States.

I wish I had been taught more about the Civil Rights Movement in school. This is the kind of history America needs to be aware of. We need to face that it wasn't that long ago that people stood up for their basic human rights. And we need to continue to keep fighting.
