This was a very good graphic memoir. John Lewis is a fascinating person, and his life story is worth telling. And even though I know a good deal about him, I still learned quite a few things. I just think it's always worthwhile - and maybe particularly worthwhile now, in the US' current political climate - to read the stories of groups of people who fought hard to make change, and who won some, and who lost some. All of those stories are invaluable, and I appreciate their telling here.

This is so good. I checked Common Sense Media before getting for my son; they recommend it for 10 and up. I plan to set the context for my son, as well as provide some background on horrible slurs for African American groups. Aside from this and some Civil Rights era violence, totally appropriate for any upper elementary aged kid. So well done, connecting the inauguration of the first black president with the John Lewis's story and Woolworth's protests. ...more

Totally engrossing. This first book focuses on John Lewis' childhood and his introduction to the civil rights movement. My favorite bit was his actual start as a preacher and leader when he was taking care of the chickens. It's adorable that he preached to his "flock" even as a child. The progression from a small group of people interested in nonviolent protest into a national movement.
