This was my second read because our Coimbra book group is reading it and I figured I should refresh my memory. I'm glad I reread it, since I did enjoy it more the second read-through. I'm still pretty weary of WWII books (book groups seem to love, love, love them), and hand-in-hand with WWII seem to go tearjerker books like this one. I really don't love books that make me very sad; I prefer them to make me very happy, which is why I like romance, I guess. This time I enjoyed the German side more ...more

What a stunning book and what beautiful writing. After The Book Thief, this is the next best book from WW2 that I have savored at leisure.
