Narration:
The narrator for the audiobook did an excellent job keeping the structurally complicated story from getting lost in the audio format. This book shouldn't work as an audiobook since it has not only shifting viewpoints but also shifting time frames. I can see why this won the Audies Award for Fiction in 2015. Totally deserved.

Book:
Unfortunately, despite elegant writing and some beautiful scenes, the book sometimes drifted into the overly sentimental. The overall plot felt unsatisfying. C

All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr. The novel centers around the lives of two families on opposing sides of the war. Werner and his sister Jutta are raised in a German orphanage after their father is killed in a mine explosion. Despite his sister's misgivings, he's proud to serve his country as one of Hitler's Youth. Meanwhile in Paris, Marie-La

Beautifully written, this book is well worth the hype. It took a long time for me to trust the book not to get overly brutal, considering its setting, but a lot of the graphic writing that comes with Holocaust stories is absent, or told vaguely. Don't get me wrong, those terrible moments in the story are really awful. However, when I look back on reading this book, they will not be what is called to mind. Instead, it will be the magic of comprehensible waves from static, counting storm drain cov ...more

Wow. Okay, this book is a huge emotional and time investment, but it is worth it for the author's writing. It is written so beautifully, and I love the short, powerful chapters. It's not a five-star book for me, only because it is pretty heartbreaking and some subject matter is gruesome. Also, this is the second book I have read this year that talks about the French occupation in Germany (The Girl You Left Behind). This is the type of book that sits heavily with you after you finish it. The auth ...more

Beautiful, poetic prose. Everything you want in a great book, leading to the space where you lose the reality of holding a book in your hand and are so immersed in the story that it becomes a five senses experience. Gorgeous!
