Narration:
The narrator for the audiobook did an excellent job keeping the structurally complicated story from getting lost in the audio format. This book shouldn't work as an audiobook since it has not only shifting viewpoints but also shifting time frames. I can see why this won the Audies Award for Fiction in 2015. Totally deserved.

Beautifully written, this book is well worth the hype. It took a long time for me to trust the book not to get overly brutal, considering its setting, but a lot of the graphic writing that comes with Holocaust stories is absent, or told vaguely. Don't get me wrong, those terrible moments in the story are really awful. However, when I look back on reading this book, they will not be what is called to mind. Wow. Okay, this book is a huge emotional and time investment, but it is worth it for the author's writing. It is written so beautifully, and I love the short, powerful chapters. It's not a five-star book for me, only because it is pretty heartbreaking and some subject matter is gruesome. Also, this is the second book I have read this year that talks about the French occupation in Germany (The Girl You Left Behind).
