Best novel I've read all year

It took me awhile but after a thousand recommendations from friends I finally picked up this book. Beautifully written & expertly paced, this book will pull at you in new & strange ways.

I know everyone LOVES this book but I just can't get interested in it. Partially because I am not interested in WWII fiction, partially because I just couldn't get invested in the characters or plot. I quit it about halfway through when I realized I was reading out of a feeling of obligation rather than enjoyment.
Maybe this book is for you, but it's not for me.

This was stunning.

I mean, seriously, believe the hype. Doerr has an incredible way with words, phrasing things in ways that are so unlike most authors. He doesn't just tell the story, he paints a picture and you get lost in the vibrant colors. It's a gem to read through and you won't be able to put it down and at the same time, you'll be sad when it's over.

If a book can make me actually have dreams about it, then it gets five stars from me.

Set during WWII, with two main characters on opposing sides who find a brief but meaningful connection. What I liked most about this was that there was less time devoted to showcasing the large-scale horrors of war and more about the everyday choices people make during times of crisis.

If you’re looking for a happy ending, however, this is not for you.
