Best novel I've read all year
It took me awhile but after a thousand recommendations from friends I finally picked up this book. Beautifully written & expertly paced, this book will pull at you in new & strange ways. ...more

I know everyone LOVES this book but I just can't get interested in it. Partially because I am not interested in WWII fiction, partially because I just couldn't get invested in the characters or plot. I quit it about halfway through when I realized I was reading out of a feeling of obligation rather than enjoyment.

Set during WWII, with two main characters on opposing sides who find a brief but meaningful connection. What I liked most about this was that there was less time devoted to showcasing the large-scale horrors of war and more about the everyday choices people make during times of crisis.
If you’re looking for a happy ending, however, this is not for you.
