I read this book to satisfy the "read a banned book" task on my 2015 Reading Challenge list. Because this book has made the top 10 of challenged books SEVEN times since 2001 (and I've already read The Hunger Games and Harry Potter which each made the list three times since 2001...) I figured it was a good one to tackle. Maybe I would have loved this if I read it when I was 14. But reading it as an adult, I just didn't get it.
This book covers Charlie's freshman year, during which he hangs out with a bunch of seniors. They drink, smoke, do drugs, unrealistically introduce him to masturbation, listen to good music and watch Rocky Horror.
I've read reviews that some of the plot elements were over the top. Which I sort of agree, but my main problem with this is the characterization. Charlie is so weird. So so weird ...more
