I read this for a book club, so maybe I was more critical for that reason than I normally would have been. I had several problems with this book, but it wasn’t terrible. Mostly I was trouble with the fact that a lot of people in this book do pretty risky and outlandish acts and it was a stretch for me that so many people in a small town would do those things with very little provoking. Well written, and an interesting perspective of World War II. I am a character book, and I can't say I left this book liking any of the characters. It was worth reading, but I can't pin point exactly why yet-I'm hopeing the girls at book club will help me figure it out.

"Rich and dark" describes this perfectly. A small town in France, occupied during WWII by Germans, a young widow trying to make ends meet, her children trading secrets for small treasures: tragedy ensues. The youngest daughter, her relationships, past and present, and memories, make for an intriguing book.
