I'm not sure what I think of this book. In a way, I thought it would be worse. It's plenty rough. I like McCarthy's style, and will definitely read more of him. But I'm just not sure that after all the zombie flicks and postapocalyptic films and books I've encountered that this really got me as much as I'd assumed it would.

My first experience with a Cormac McCarthy book and I am not in a whit disappointed. His attention to detail, whether it be past or present really marks the desolation and fear felt by the man and his boy as we follow them, down the road.
Could not put this book down, not even to gasp or sigh at the coming events. McCarthys triumph in this novel is presenting a world so bleak but also characters so driven to seek out hope, somewhere in the ashes.

I had a lot of trouble reading other books by the author but I think this books subject matter and the way it jumped right into the heart of a complex dystopia had me riveted. The authors intense descriptions can be off putting for some readers, but I was hooked. The descriptions just forced the imagery into my mind and made the complex reality of this world come together for me. In this way I don't know if I could watch the movie, given how vivid my picture of the story is.

A young boy and his father struggle to survive a post-apocalyptic America.
The writing is sparse and almost everything about the book is dark. As a reader, I was frustrated not knowing more details. I felt manipulated into feeling certain emotions but had no context in which to place them. Also, the ending is just a wee bit too tidy for my liking.
Still. Not a bad read. Although I prefer Alas, Babylon.

The writing gets 5 stars, but I didn't really like the story itself. Very descriptive, post-apocalyptic imagery. Father and son travel "the road" scavenging for food and avoiding "the bad guys." There is little hope left in the world, but they continue on. The narrator was very easy to listen to.

I can't believe I finally finished it-- the darkest, most depressing book I've ever read in my life. I made myself do it-- am I glad? no.
